Every session on the Nourishing Families includes a food tasting. These depend on what’s in season for example or what the group are interested in. Recently we did vegetables 3 ways, Chinese leaf cabbage, cauliflower and Swede were all prepared raw, steamed and cooked in different ways. The Chinese leaf was sautéed with ginger, the cauliflower roasted with garlic, cumin and coriander and the Swede lightly pickled and then dressed with lemon and oil.
Swede was the surprising hit, crunchy, slightly sweet with a lemony tang.
The mums all commented on how when preparing for their children they tend to offer very plain cooked or raw veg. Trying different seasonings or flavours might encourage more consumption!

Food tasting at the last #NourishingFamilies session. Food manufacturers aim to reach the bliss point of sweet or salty with their products. We, on the other hand, explored flavour. The parents tasted plain banana pancake, then with added orange zest, cinnamon or raisins and then one with all three. The last one was back to plain but with added sugar. The verdict? All liked the pancake with lots of flavours, and the sugar sweetened one interestingly tasted less sweet (obviously nowhere near bliss point) or sweet but quite empty. Give children food with flavour and added sugar is less likely to be missed.
